Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t letting the passage of time slow her down. The star, known for her role in The Avengers, recently opened up about the challenges of aging in Hollywood. In a candid conversation on her website Goop’s new podcast, “The Beauty Closet,” Gwyneth shared her thoughts on the often harsh judgment that comes with getting older in an industry obsessed with youth and beauty.
On Being Seen as "The Beautiful Woman"
During the podcast's first episode, released on July 23, Gwyneth, now 46, opened up about how she's been perceived over the years. “I’ve been considered to be this woman, you know…” she began, prompting one of the hosts, either Jean Godfrey-June or Megan O’Neill, to interject with, “…Beautiful woman.”
Thank you to my two beauties for the best morning, and for my entire life. I love you both so much. I love all you mamas out there! Happy Mother’s Day!!

The Evolution of Identity
As she delves deeper into the conversation, Gwyneth reflects on how being cast as a beautiful woman has affected her identity over the years. “I’ve been considered, not by everyone… It’s a weird thing to be, I don’t mean in a pejorative way objectified, but, you know, sort of, like, cast as something and put in a box,” she explains. The Academy Award-winning actress recalls how she was praised for her looks when she was younger but questions what happens as she ages. “And then I think when you come to age, if you have this broad identity as that, like, what does it mean?” she muses.
Embracing the Changes
Gwyneth, who is the proud mother of Apple Martin, 15, and Moses Martin, 13, acknowledges the hurdles that come with getting older. “To get wrinkles and, like, get closer to menopause, and all these things… what happens to your identity as a woman if you’re not f–kable and beautiful?” she adds, expressing her thoughts on the societal pressures women face.
Even though millions of fans admire her style and beauty, Gwyneth admits that confidence isn’t always easy to maintain. “I’ve always felt so funny about my looks, and, like, I think that it’s very rare to think that you’re a beautiful person,” she says. “I feel like every other woman, like, I don’t see that when I look in the mirror.”

Despite the challenges, Gwyneth sees a silver lining in aging. “Luckily, what’s happening at the same time in parallel… is you just start to like yourself,” she says. “I think you get to a point where it’s almost like your sort of pulchritude is waning in a way and your inner beauty is, like, really coming out, and so it’s this funny shift that’s happening.”

While her confidence has grown, Gwyneth admits that sometimes she still focuses on the superficial. “It’s like, you feel so good, you know who you are, hopefully you value the relationships in your life and your work and your contribution to the world… but then you’re like, ‘Wow, I have crow’s feet. Damn!’” she jokes.
