For decades, Whoopi Goldberg has lit up our screens with her incredible performances. Yet, there’s so much more to this legendary actress than her award-winning roles. Recently, she’s been sharing personal insights about her life, including the passing of her mother, Emma Johnson, and how it’s shaped her outlook on life today.

Whoopi's Heartfelt Reflections on Losing Her Mom

At the age of 63, Whoopi experienced the loss of her beloved mother, Emma Johnson, on August 29, 2010, following a stroke. Surprisingly, the Oscar-winning star admits that she doesn’t remember the exact date of her mom’s passing. Speaking candidly at RuPaul’s DragCon in 2019, Whoopi revealed, "I don’t remember when anyone I love passes. I know they did... but I couldn’t tell you when it was. I guess it’s so that it doesn’t weigh me down." This emotional response shows how deeply she cherishes her loved ones while finding ways to keep their memories alive without letting grief overwhelm her.

    Mom's Honest Feedback: A Lesson in Self-Awareness

Whoopi fondly recalls her late mother's candid feedback, which now comes from her daughter, Alex Martin. "It’s weird because that was the one person who... my daughter does it now... who will say, 'I don’t know if you’ve seen your face recently? I was watching the show, you might wanna take a look at your face,'" Whoopi shared. "Because apparently I have expressions and sometimes I think it’s in my head and it’s not." She continued, "My kid will call me and go, 'Really? I saw it all on your face.' So my mom used to say that, she used to say, 'Do you want everyone to know that you want to smack someone in the head? I don’t think that’s good for you.'" This humorous yet heartfelt moment highlights the timeless wisdom passed down through generations.

Alex Martin: The New Mom in Whoopi's Life

Even though Emma is no longer with her, Whoopi has noticed a familiar pattern emerging in her relationship with her only child, Alex Martin, now 46. "My daughter has decided she’s going to be my mother. 'You should have a guy in your life!' No. 'You should have a girl in your life!' No. I don’t want anybody in my life. I’m OK. 'But you’re alone.' It’s like, 'I’m OK.' I had one kid, she has three, and has been married to the same man three different times," the Ghost star revealed. It's a testament to the bond between mother and daughter, where roles can shift, but the love remains constant.

Remembering Emma: A Life Full of Adventure

Even though nearly a decade has passed since her mother’s passing, Whoopi fondly remembers the incredible life Emma led. "I’m not sad, because she had a great time," Whoopi shared on The View at the time. "My mother was a great adventure person, so she loved to go on adventures and my brother and I made sure that her life was full and rich." These words reflect not only the love and respect Whoopi had for her mother but also the beautiful legacy she left behind.
