Reese Witherspoon Connects With Her Character in 'Big Little Lies'

Playing Madeline Mackenzie in the hit series Big Little Lies brought a sense of familiarity for Reese Witherspoon. The 43-year-old Oscar-winning actress found herself relating to the characters in more ways than one. Not only did her life experiences mirror the show's themes, but she also embraced the opportunity to portray a mature woman who has lived through significant life events.

In a recent conversation with the Daily Mail, Reese explained, "One thing that struck me about Big Little Lies was how much I could see my own life reflected in each of the characters. As a divorced woman, a single mother, a married mother, and someone who has had another child in a second marriage, I felt a deep connection to the storyline. It was like watching my life unfold on screen."

Reese Embraces the Lines on Her Face

Reese shared her thoughts on aging and how she's come to appreciate the natural signs of it. "When I first saw myself on screen during the editing process, I noticed the little lines on my face and thought to myself, 'These are mine, I earned them.' Every wrinkle tells a story, and I’ve worked hard to get them," she revealed. For Reese, these lines are a testament to her journey through life, and she wouldn't change a thing.

    Reese's Journey to Acceptance

This isn't the first time Reese has spoken about embracing her aging process. In a previous interview with Allure, she opened up about the new perspective she's gained as a woman in her 40s. "I have a unique point of view now because I’ve lived for 43 years," she said. "Back when I was 25, I didn't have the same depth of experience or insight. Now, I can talk about the changes I want to see in the world with thoughtfulness. I've earned those gray hairs and fine lines, and honestly, I prefer being 43 to being 25."

    Changing the Narrative on Aging

Reese hopes to shift the conversation around aging, especially in Hollywood. She believes it’s time to move away from the negative perception of getting older and instead celebrate the wisdom and experience that come with it. "I really wish we could change the way we view aging," she expressed in an interview with Now to Love. "It’s something we all go through, and it’s important to embrace it."

She suggests taking good care of our skin and treating it with the same attention we give to other aspects of our lives. "We need to be kind to our skin, just like we take care of our cars or appliances. Keep it healthy, keep it tended to, and let it reflect the journey we’ve been on," Reese concluded.
