Let’s take a moment to remember a true hero. NYPD Officer Brian Mulkeen was tragically killed in the line of duty, and now the Blue Lives Matter organization is stepping up to help his family. On that fateful Sunday, September 29, Officer Mulkeen was accidentally shot by fellow officers during an intense operation to apprehend a suspect. The following day, Christopher Brinkley, another NYPD officer, launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Mulkeen’s loved ones. This initiative is being run in partnership with the police advocacy organization, aiming to provide financial relief during a heartbreaking time.

Officer Mulkeen’s story is one of bravery and dedication. As Christopher Brinkley wrote on the GoFundMe page, "Hero police officer Brian Mulkeen was gunned down early on September 29, 2019." Brian, a proud member of the Bronx Boro Anti-Crime unit, was out there doing what he loved—patrolling the streets for known gang members. That night, he encountered a dangerous individual armed with a weapon. A fierce struggle broke out, and tragically, Officer Mulkeen lost his life in the process. According to a report by the New York Post, Mulkeen, who was just 33 years old, had chased down the suspect, disarmed him, and started wrestling him to the ground. However, in the chaos of the situation, other officers mistook the struggle for a threat and fired shots, resulting in the loss of two lives.

Reflecting on a Tragic Incident

During a press briefing, Police Commissioner James O’Neill described the incident as a devastating case of friendly fire. He stated, "This is a tragic case of friendly fire. But let's be clear—we lost a courageous public servant because of the actions of a violent criminal who endangered the lives of the police and everyone we serve." O'Neill further explained that despite the intense struggle, Mulkeen managed to retain his firearm throughout the entire encounter. The entire confrontation lasted just ten seconds, from the first shot fired to the last. "We lost another great NYPD police officer," O'Neill said with a heavy heart. "Brian Mulkeen truly had such a long and productive career ahead of him."
