What’s Next for Mitzi Gaynor?
With so much on her plate, Mitzi’s schedule is as packed as ever. She’s gearing up for the Turner Classic Movies cruise, a project close to her heart. Interestingly, her first-ever cruise experience was working for the Holland America Group, though she admits she wasn’t exactly thrilled about it at first. “I was terrified of the water,” she laughs, recalling how every TV channel seemed to be airing Titanic during that time. Despite her initial apprehension, Mitzi found joy in performing Cole Porter songs alongside Michael Feinstein this past August. She’s also busy organizing an auction and working on her memoir, which she says is almost ready to meet the world. Clearly, Mitzi isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
A Special Bond with Ethel Merman
Mitzi’s friendship with Ethel Merman, her co-star in There’s No Business Like Show Business, was one of the most cherished relationships of her life. “We needed each other,” she explains. Ethel affectionately called Mitzi’s late husband, film producer Jack Bean, “Yuncle,” while Mitzi lovingly referred to Ethel as “Mom.” Their bond was so strong that they often ditched everyone else on set to spend time together.
Marilyn Monroe: A Delicate Dynamic
While Ethel Merman had a special place in Mitzi’s heart, her relationship with Marilyn Monroe wasn’t quite as smooth. Ethel wasn’t particularly fond of Marilyn’s tendency to arrive late, which created tension on set. “You don’t mess with Superman’s cape, spit into the wind, or keep Ethel Merman waiting,” Mitzi quips. Marilyn, understandably intimidated by the seasoned pros around her, struggled to keep up with their demanding schedules. Ethel’s impatience didn’t sit well with Marilyn, leading to occasional clashes.
