Life as a Mom and Country Music Superstar

Being a country music star might seem like all glitz and glamour, but Jennifer Nettles revealed it's not always as easy as it looks. At the 2019 CMA Awards on November 13, the Sugarland singer got real with Closer Weekly about the challenges she’s faced since becoming a mom. The 45-year-old powerhouse admitted that while performing on stage and singing hits like "Stuck Like Glue" is second nature to her, raising her 6-year-old son Magnus with husband Justin Miller has added an entirely new layer of complexity to her life.

“Here’s the thing: being a woman in this industry is tough. Add motherhood into the mix, and it gets even harder. To have the kind of success where you can support yourself and bring your child along with you while continuing to do what you love—that’s a huge hurdle,” Jennifer explained. She went on to emphasize the importance of supporting women in the music industry, especially those trying to balance careers and families.

    Supporting Women in Music

Jennifer is passionate about uplifting women in the music industry. She believes that if women are given the right support, they can continue to thrive in their careers while raising families. “We need to support women more because when they succeed, they’re able to bring that support with them on the road. They can still do what they love, and we can still enjoy their music,” she said. “Becoming a mom and staying in this business—that’s the biggest challenge. But it’s one worth overcoming.”

    Raising Magnus: A Mom’s Perspective

When it comes to raising Magnus, Jennifer hopes to instill values of humility and gratitude in her son. “I want to keep him grounded. At six years old, he’s still pretty unaware of what it means to be in the public eye or what celebrity really entails,” she shared. “As he grows, I hope he learns to appreciate the simple things in life. We’ll see what lessons he picks up along the way!”

Her Powerful Statement at the CMAs

At the 53rd annual CMA Awards, Jennifer made a bold statement that caught everyone’s attention. Dressed in a striking white pantsuit designed by Christian Siriano, she accessorized with a pink cape that read “play our f–king records, please and thank you” in bold black letters on the inside. This wasn’t just a fashion choice—it was a message. “I was inspired to make this statement when I heard the CMAs were celebrating women this year. What better way to take the conversation beyond the applause and really drive home the point that women in country music need more support?” she explained.

“This isn’t just about one night of celebration. It’s about taking action. Women in country music are underrepresented on radio and playlists, and it’s time for that to change,” Jennifer stated. “We’ve seen the impact women have had on this genre, and it’s incredible. Let’s keep the momentum going and make sure these voices are heard—not just tonight, but every day.”
