Even though Princess Diana never got the chance to meet her future daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle, her former assistant, Paul Burrell, has some fascinating insights. In a candid chat with Life & Style, Paul shared how these two extraordinary women share more in common than you might think.
Connecting the Dots Between Diana and Meghan
Paul Burrell, the royal butler who knew Princess Diana intimately, recently opened up about the striking similarities between the late royal and Duchess Meghan. “When I watched Meghan, I was instantly reminded of Princess Diana’s candidness and honesty,” Paul revealed. He went on to say that during Meghan’s most revealing interview about adapting to life under the public spotlight, she displayed the same raw emotions that Diana once did. “I saw someone who was deeply vulnerable, much like Diana felt when she opened up about her struggles within the royal family.”
The Interviews That Revealed Their Inner Worlds
Paul drew a direct comparison between Meghan’s interview with ITV News at Ten anchor Tom Bradby for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey and Diana’s own public declarations. He recalled Diana’s famous plea: “‘Look at me. I am suffering inside this family.’” This sentiment, Paul noted, echoed through Meghan and Harry’s own challenges. “It’s clear they’ve both experienced the weight of royal life in their own ways,” he added.

What Might Have Been: A Friendship Forged
Paul, who also spoke about the upcoming documentary titled Princess Diana’s ‘Wicked’ Stepmother, imagined what a relationship between Diana and Meghan might have looked like. “Diana would have embraced Meghan with open arms and guided her through the complexities of royal life,” he shared. Reflecting on Diana’s untimely death in 1997, Paul lamented, “It’s heartbreaking that Diana isn’t here to witness Harry’s life and meet her grandchildren. She would have been thrilled.”
Meghan: A Guiding Light for the Modern Royal Family
Besides highlighting their shared vulnerabilities, Paul praised Meghan for her role in reshaping the royal family. “Meghan brings qualities that are essential for the royal family right now,” he explained. “As a divorced woman, a mixed-race individual, an American, and an actress, she represents everything the royal family needs to address in today’s world. This is her moment to shine.”

A Much-Needed Break for Harry and Meghan
Despite all the headlines surrounding the royal couple lately, Paul predicts that Harry and Meghan will take a well-deserved break as the holidays approach. “You’ll likely see the Sussexes go off the grid for a while,” Paul said. “They’re planning to celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.S. with baby Archie, and they deserve it.”
“It’s time for them to relax and focus on family. After everything they’ve been through, they need this downtime,” he added. Fans of the couple are sure to agree that a peaceful holiday season is exactly what they need.
We couldn’t agree more—here’s hoping they enjoy every moment of their much-needed break!
