Just hours after the news broke about Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp's most recent split, including the end of their engagement, a close source to the on-and-off couple spoke to Closer Weekly. It seems the decision to part ways wasn't an easy one for either party.
“She will always have a deep affection for John, and honestly, she’s not laying any blame on him,” an insider close to the former pair exclusively revealed to Closer. “John is who he is, and that’s something Meg understands and respects. But at the same time, Meg needs to maintain her own vision, her own identity, and plot out her life the way she feels is best. Right now, she believes it's best for them to go their separate ways.”
Memories Shared, Hearts Torn

Though the couple has decided to part ways, the source emphasized that the breakup was incredibly difficult due to the many cherished memories they shared. “Meg wrestled with this decision for a long time, shedding more than a few tears over it,” the insider explained. “She loves John deeply — he’s an intense man, and she says she’s never felt the deep and profound love he offered her with anyone else in her life, even in her marriages.”

The Decision Wasn’t Easy
However, the source revealed that Meg and John, who began dating in 2010, were no longer aligned in their visions for the future. “Meg is 57, and her vision of how she wants to live the rest of her life just doesn’t align with John’s,” the insider elaborated. “She’s going through heartbreak now, but she believes this decision will help her avoid an even deeper heartbreak down the road if they had gotten married.”
The couple called it quits just days before the first anniversary of their highly anticipated engagement, Closer Weekly confirmed on Wednesday, October 30. Fans may recall that the “Jack and Diane” rocker, 68, and the You’ve Got Mail actress announced their engagement with a simple Instagram post in November 2018. “ENGAGED!” she captioned a pen drawing of the two.
