Let’s be real—Lou Diamond Phillips isn’t wasting any time wishing for his younger days back. The legendary actor behind the iconic film La Bamba recently opened up to Closer Weekly at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, sharing how much he truly loves being 57 years old. And why wouldn’t he? He’s found contentment, something many of us spend our whole lives chasing.
“I think I’ve settled into this beautiful rhythm of what makes me truly happy,” Lou said with a smile. “The roles I’m playing now—they carry so much depth, so much history. It’s all earned, every bit of it. I feel completely comfortable in my own skin, both in the characters I portray and as a person. There’s no doubt about it—I’m at peace with who I am.”
Contentment Through Family, Art, and More

For Lou, finding joy comes from the little things that make life meaningful. “Being a father, being a husband, being a friend—it’s all part of the journey,” he shared. “And these days, I’m diving deep into writing and directing. It’s like I’m still exploring new challenges, but I’m not as scattered as I used to be. There’s a calmness now that wasn’t there before.”

Stepping Into Fatherhood On and Off Screen
Lou is currently starring as Gil Arroyo in the hit TV series Prodigal Son, and guess what? His castmates naturally see him as the dad figure on set. “Yeah, I’m definitely the dad around here,” Lou joked. “Or maybe the crazy Uncle Lou—it’s one or the other. But hey, it’s been great. Michael Sheen and I have taken on the role of father figures on the show. One of us is twisted and insane, while the other is a little more grounded. You can decide which one is which!”
