When you're both A-list actors with packed schedules, finding time for each other can feel like an impossible task. But for Sterling K. Brown and his wife Ryan Michelle Bathe, it's all about making it work—and making it work well. They've managed to keep their marriage strong despite the chaos of their careers. How do they do it? By leaning on each other, prioritizing quality time, and surrounding themselves with a supportive community.
Relationship Maintenance: It Takes a Village
During the 2nd annual Bloom Summit at The Beverly Hilton hotel on June 1, Ryan, now 42, opened up to Us Weekly about the secrets to her and Sterling's successful marriage. "You just have to make it a priority," she said. "Otherwise, everything falls apart. It's like this: if you're not actively working on your relationship, you're coasting—and that's dangerous. There have been moments where we've let things slide, and trust me, it doesn't end well. You know what they say, 'It takes a village'? Well, it's true for more than just raising kids. It takes a village to raise a marriage too."
Ryan went on to explain how important it is to have a support system in place. "There are people in our lives who step up when we need them most," she shared. "They're the ones saying, 'Hey, I've got your back. Bring the kids over here today so you two can catch a breath and focus on each other.' It’s those little acts of kindness that keep relationships thriving, even during the busiest times."

Why Date Nights Matter—Even When Life Gets Crazy
For Ryan and Sterling, maintaining their connection means carving out time for date nights, no matter how hectic life gets. "We forget how crucial these moments are when we get caught up in the grind," Ryan admitted. "But let me tell you, being busy means nothing if you don’t take the time to recharge. Think about it like brushing your teeth—you wouldn’t leave the house without doing it, right? Same goes for nurturing your relationship. It’s essential!"
The couple has been married since 2007 and shares two wonderful sons together. Their commitment to each other is clear, even amidst the whirlwind of Hollywood life. But as Ryan points out, staying connected isn't always easy. "It’s tough for us, just like it is for everyone else," she acknowledged. "That’s why we treat it like any other important habit. You just have to make it non-negotiable."

On-Set Romance: Strengthening Bonds Through Work
Of course, when traditional date nights aren't possible, Ryan and Sterling find creative ways to spend time together. For instance, Ryan has joined Sterling on set for some of his projects, including the hit NBC show This Is Us. She plays Yvette, a character featured in flashback scenes of the Pearson family. Her appearances aren't just professional—they're personal too. "It’s one way we make sure we stay connected," Ryan explained. "Even if we’re working, we’re still creating memories together."
Ryan’s role as Yvette continues throughout several episodes, providing ongoing opportunities for the couple to collaborate and strengthen their bond. It’s a clever solution to balancing work and love, proving that even in the fast-paced world of entertainment, there's always room for romance.
