Whoopi Goldberg Says She Got Married Because It Was 'Expected'

Let’s talk about one of Hollywood’s most iconic figures, Whoopi Goldberg. She’s not just a TV host; she’s a legend. But behind the scenes, Whoopi has had her fair share of ups and downs when it comes to love. In a candid conversation, she’s opening up about how finding true love wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for her. In fact, the The View host, who’s been married and divorced three times, admitted that settling down wasn’t even part of her original plan. She only did it because society expected her to.

Listen, I get it. We all have these societal pressures that can sometimes feel suffocating. At 63, Whoopi revealed to The New York Times Magazine, “People expect you to have a boyfriend. They expect you to get married.” She continued, “So I kept trying to do that, but deep down, I didn’t want to share my life with someone else. I didn’t want anyone questioning my decisions or feeling the need to make someone else feel better. It wasn’t me.”

Whoopi’s journey through love hasn’t been a smooth one. She’s been married to Alvin Martin from 1973 to 1979, David Claessen from 1986 to 1988, and Lyle Trachtenberg from 1994 to 1995. Through all these experiences, she eventually realized that relationships require a level of vulnerability that she wasn’t ready for. “But if you’re in a relationship, you have to share, and it took me a while to figure out that I just didn’t want to,” she confessed.

As she reflected on her past marriages, the Ghost actress admitted that she started noticing gaps in her relationships. “I’d be thinking, ‘Why don’t I feel the way I’m supposed to?’” Whoopi told the outlet. “Then one day, it hit me. I don’t have to conform. I tried marriage, and it just wasn’t for me. You can’t stay in a marriage just because everyone expects you to.”
