In today's fast-paced world, finding a balance between career and family can feel like an impossible task. But Andy Cohen, the ever-busy TV personality and author, is proving that it’s not only possible but also deeply rewarding. At 51, Andy has managed to juggle his high-profile career with the joys and challenges of fatherhood to his son, Benjamin. Speaking candidly with Us Weekly on July 23, while promoting his partnership with Purina, Andy shared how he approaches this delicate balancing act.
“It’s all about taking it one day at a time,” Andy revealed. “I’ve learned to say yes only to the things I’m truly passionate about. It’s not easy, but it’s the key to staying sane.” The reality TV star admitted that he’s had to turn down opportunities that he would have eagerly accepted in the past. “For instance, when they asked me to present an award at the Billboard Awards, I wanted to say yes so badly. But the thought of being away in Vegas for 24 hours just didn’t fit with my current lifestyle,” he explained. Despite these challenges, Andy sometimes brings Benjamin to work, thanks to his son’s calm and well-behaved nature.

Understanding Benjamin’s Unique Personality
“Benjamin’s personality is a breath of fresh air,” Andy shared with genuine admiration. “He’s incredibly sweet and observant. Before fully engaging with someone, he takes the time to assess the room and the situation. It’s fascinating to watch because it’s so different from my own approach. I walk into a room and immediately say hello to everyone, but Ben takes his time.” Andy went on to describe his son’s mellow demeanor, noting that Benjamin is comfortable being passed around to different people but waits a moment before offering his full, beaming smile. “It’s one of the things that makes him so special,” Andy added.
Andy’s Journey to Fatherhood
On February 5, 2019, Andy welcomed Benjamin into the world through a surrogate. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed gratitude for the incredible woman who made this possible. “I worked with a surrogate in California because, surprisingly, surrogacy is illegal in many states, including New York. I can’t wrap my head around that. It’s a completely voluntary process, yet there are so many restrictions,” he said. “My surrogate saw it as the ultimate gift—she gave me life. I’ll always be forever grateful to her.”

The Moment Benjamin Arrived
When asked about the day Benjamin was born, Andy couldn’t help but laugh at the memory. “I was in the delivery room, hoping for a baby with a full head of hair. And oh boy, did he deliver! The first thing I saw was this magnificent head of hair emerging. I was absolutely amazed,” he recalled with a chuckle. “What struck me most was how alert he was during the first two hours. His eyes were wide open, and he remained calm and peaceful. It was such a profound experience that I still can’t fully put into words.”
During an appearance on Wendy Williams’ show, Andy opened up about what having a baby means to him. “Family has always been incredibly important to me. I always thought that having a child would be part of my future, and when the time came, I knew it was now or never. So, I took the leap, and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made,” he confessed. “There’s nothing quite like the bond I share with Benjamin.”
