Let me tell you about Drew Barrymore, one of Hollywood's most iconic stars. She recently shared how she initially didn't want her daughters, Olive and Frankie, to follow in her acting footsteps. But, as life would have it, her perspective has shifted over time, and now she's more open to the idea. This story is all about motherhood, family traditions, and finding balance in a world full of glitz and glamour.
From Reluctance to Acceptance: Drew Barrymore's Journey as a Mom
When Drew Barrymore became a mom, she had grand plans for her children. At first, she thought acting was some sort of dark force she needed to protect her kids from. “When I first had my kids, I was so determined to do everything differently with them,” Drew, now 44, revealed on the Today show. “I was like, ‘My daughters will never be actors! No way!’”
But then something clicked. Drew realized that acting isn’t just a job; it’s a family legacy. “Then I thought, wait a minute, this is a great family trade. I’m a Barrymore. My family has been doing this for hundreds of years, across multiple generations,” she explained. Drew herself started acting at a young age, starring in films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Firestarter. Despite her early success, she wanted something different for her daughters—a normal, traditional, and safe upbringing.

Creating Balance: Protecting Childhood While Encouraging Creativity
As much as Drew wanted her daughters to experience a typical childhood, she also noticed their natural talent for performing. “They’re total performers,” she admitted. “Maybe they do have that Barrymore blood running through their veins.” Drew believes it’s possible to give her kids a normal, protected childhood while still nurturing their creative spirits. “Olive knows that I’d prefer she wait until she’s 18 before diving into acting,” Drew said. “At that point, it’s really her life, her decision.”
She continued, “There’s a way to provide a normal childhood that’s totally safe, yet still encourage their love for self-expression. When they were first born, I just didn’t know how to reconcile those two things. Now, I do.”

Supportive Mom: Ready to Cheer for Her Girls' Dreams
Drew has come a long way in her thinking. If Olive and Frankie decide to pursue acting when they’re older, Drew says she’ll be their biggest supporter. “If they choose to go into acting at the right age, I’d be the most supportive, fiercest lion for them,” she told Us Weekly. “Now I’m like, ‘If you want to do theater in high school or make it your career, I’m behind you 100%.’ I just want them to have a normal childhood first.”
And if her daughters do choose acting, they’ll have plenty of inspiration from their mom’s iconic films. “They love Ever After and 50 First Dates,” Drew joked during a Good Morning America interview. “It’s funny because whenever someone comes over and one of my movies is playing, I’m like, ‘I swear I’m not that ego-driven jerk.’ But they call it a ‘mom movie,’ and they enjoy watching it. I’m proud of who I am and what I’ve accomplished.”
