In a deeply personal and emotional conversation on "The Talk," legendary entertainer Charo recounted the tragic day in February 2019 when her beloved husband, Kjell Rasten, took his own life behind their Beverly Hills home. The story, filled with raw emotion and reflection, sheds light on the unexpected and often silent struggles that people face.
A Life Shared, A Loss Felt
Charo described Kjell as the epitome of companionship, stating he was "the best husband, the best father, the best companion." Yet, she admitted that she had no inkling of his intentions that fateful day. "I had no clue, no clue at all," she said, emphasizing the shock that rippled through her life when she discovered her husband’s lifeless body.
Recalling the day, Charo spoke about their last dinner together. "He was so quiet, almost unusually so. During dinner, he talked very little, which was strange for him," she explained. "Then, when it came time to go to bed, he looked at me with this strange expression, one I couldn’t quite place."

The Final Moments

Charo revealed how Kjell had intentionally made it difficult for her to find him by positioning himself in an alley near their home, where grounds crews typically left debris and clippings. "He didn’t want me to find him," she tearfully explained. "When I did, I thought he had fallen." But the truth was far more devastating. "I ran to him, thinking he had just fallen, and I hugged him. That’s when I realized—my clothes, my hair, everything was covered in blood. It was like I had taken a shower in blood," she recounted, her voice trembling.
Finding Help Amidst Tragedy
Once Charo realized what had happened, she acted quickly, seeking help for her husband. "I was screaming in the street, covered in blood, and a tour bus stopped. They called the police and an ambulance," she said, fighting back tears. When the authorities arrived, they broke the news to Charo. "They told me, 'He didn’t fall; he put a bullet in his head.' In that moment, I felt like I had a bullet in my heart," she revealed, her words painting a vivid picture of the heartbreak she endured.
A Legacy of Love and Struggles

Soon after the incident, Kjell was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. A statement confirmed his passing, revealing that Kjell had been battling depression and a rare skin disease called bullous pemphigoid. "His health had been declining, and the combination of his condition and the medications became too much for him," the statement explained. "In the end, he chose to end his suffering." Charo's story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the support systems we need to build for our loved ones.
