Marriage and Heartbreak: The Struggles Behind the Fame
When Patrick married Lisa Niemi in 1975, the couple set off to build a life together in New York City. They dreamed of starting a family, but life had other plans. "I did become pregnant, but I had a miscarriage. It was absolutely devastating," Lisa revealed, her voice heavy with emotion. Don chimed in, “It crushed him. You could tell he would’ve been an incredible dad. Even as an uncle, you could see the love and care he had for children.”

Tragedy wasn’t the only challenge they faced. Patrick developed a drinking problem, which strained their marriage. In the early 2000s, Lisa made the difficult decision to leave their New Mexico ranch for a year. “I told him, ‘I can’t sit here and watch you die,’” she explained. It was a turning point in their relationship, and with the help of therapy, they were able to rebuild their bond stronger than ever.
“Things went from being absolutely terrible to the best they had ever been,” Lisa reflected. “We finally gained the wisdom to create the life we truly wanted.”
Patrick's Final Days: A Legacy of Love
Lisa remained steadfast by Patrick’s side until his final moments. When he passed away in September 2009, she knew that he could finally rest in peace. “I love you,” she remembers him whispering to her just before he took his last breath. “There was peace at the end,” she admitted, her voice filled with both sorrow and acceptance.
Even now, Lisa feels Patrick's presence in her life. “I still feel him here. I feel like he hasn’t left. I can feel every contour of his hand in mine,” she shared. Patrick’s memory continues to inspire those who knew him and the countless fans who cherish his work.
