Trace Adkins, the gravelly-voiced country legend, was spotted at the Los Angeles premiere of Bennett’s War on August 13, where he opened up about his longtime friend Blake Shelton. When asked by Us Weekly and other reporters if Blake had changed since dating Gwen Stefani, Trace was quick to set the record straight.
“He just really hasn’t changed, you know?” Trace, now 57, said with a chuckle. “Somebody asked me today, ‘Of all the country artists you know, which one do you think is really a country guy? The most authentic?’ And… you know, it’s Blake. He lives the life. He really does.”

Trace went on to explain that while Blake might be thriving in the spotlight with Gwen by his side, his heart remains firmly rooted in Oklahoma. “He does well and conducts himself well out here in civilization, but let’s be honest—he’d rather be back in Oklahoma, chilling in the middle of the woods,” Trace revealed. It’s clear that no matter how far Blake travels or who he dates, his country roots will always run deep.
Garth Brooks Joins the Conversation
Trace isn’t the only country star chiming in on Blake’s love life. Garth Brooks, another titan of the genre, has also weighed in with some playful banter. Blake himself shared a funny story about a recent interaction with Garth during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“I got a text from my man here earlier that said, ‘Hey, man, we got your dressing room set up for you,’” Blake recalled, laughing as he shared the inside joke. “And he sent me a picture, and there was a sign that said ‘Mr. Stefani’ on it.”
Blake admitted that Garth has been giving him a bit of a hard time about his relationship with Gwen, but hey, who can blame him? “It sucks because Garth is kind of off-limits,” Blake joked. “You can’t mess with him because he’s like the godfather of country music.”

He went on to explain how much he’s learned from Gwen, particularly when it comes to navigating relationships and understanding people. “I tell her this all the time, and she doesn’t realize it, but Gwen’s one of these people that I learn so much from, because no matter what the situation is, she has a way of looking at something from every angle possible,” Blake shared. “And if there’s turmoil or something going on, instead of just jumping to conclusions or reacting, it’s, ‘Well, here’s why they may feel that way.’”
