Hey there, friends! Let’s talk about one of the most iconic actors of our time, Robert Downey Jr., who’s been on an incredible cinematic journey for the past decade. Playing Iron Man in the Marvel films was an unforgettable ride, culminating in the blockbuster hit, Avengers: Endgame. As RDJ gears up for the next phase of his career, he’s bringing along some furry companions in the magical world of Dolittle, a film originally titled The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.

From Iron Man to Talking Animals: A New Chapter

Inspired by the beloved children’s books penned by Hugh Lofting, which first hit shelves with The Story of Doctor Dolittle in 1920, this new movie takes us on a fresh adventure. As Universal Pictures describes it, "Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most cherished characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle. After the tragic loss of his wife seven years ago, the quirky Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), a celebrated doctor and veterinarian from Queen Victoria's England, retreats into solitude within the confines of Dolittle Manor, surrounded by his menagerie of exotic creatures. But when Queen Victoria herself falls critically ill, the reluctant Dr. Dolittle is thrust into an epic quest to a mythical island in search of a cure. Along the way, he rediscovers his wit, courage, and the joy of connection with both humans and animals alike."

Who’s Who in the Animal Kingdom?

Joining Dr. Dolittle on this unforgettable journey is a young apprentice, played by Harry Collett from Dunkirk, who tags along out of sheer determination and admiration. The film also features a lively cast of animal sidekicks, including an anxious gorilla voiced by Oscar winner Rami Malek, an enthusiastic but slightly clueless duck voiced by another Oscar winner, Octavia Spencer, and a squabbling duo—a cynical ostrich brought to life by Kumail Nanjiani of The Big Sick and an upbeat polar bear voiced by John Cena from Bumblebee. Leading the pack is a strong-willed parrot, voiced by the talented Emma Thompson, who serves as Dolittle's most trusted advisor and confidante.

Other standout voices in the ensemble include Craig Robinson as Fleming, a mouse; Tom Holland, who played Spider-Man alongside Robert in the Marvel universe, lending his talent to Jip, a loyal dog; Selena Gomez as Betsy, a giraffe with a story to tell; Marion Cotillard as Tutu, a cunning fox; Carmen Ejogo as Regine, a lioness with a commanding presence; and Ralph Fiennes as Barry, a tiger with a twist.

From Rex Harrison to Eddie Murphy: A Legacy Continues

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Dr. Dolittle on the big screen. Back in 1967, Rex Harrison famously portrayed the role in the musical Doctor Dolittle, while Eddie Murphy gave the character a comedic spin in two films released in 1998 and 2001. Now, Robert Downey Jr. is putting his own unique stamp on this timeless tale.

So, mark your calendars! Dolittle and his extraordinary crew of animal pals are set to hit theaters on January 17, 2020. Get ready to laugh, cry, and maybe even learn a thing or two about friendship and courage along the way.
