When Meghan Markle tied the knot with Prince Harry back in May 2018, it seemed like the ultimate fairy tale. But as it turns out, life as the Duchess of Sussex isn't all glitter and gold. In a candid interview with ITV News at Ten's Tom Bradby, Meghan revealed that even her close friends tried to warn her about what she was getting into when she started dating Queen Elizabeth's grandson.
Meghan's Honest Take on the Royal Life
During the interview for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, which aired in the U.K. on October 20, 2019, Meghan shared some unexpected truths about her life as a royal. The 38-year-old former actress admitted, "In all honesty, I had no idea what I was stepping into, and I think that might be hard for people to understand." Meghan went on to explain that while she was aware of the public spotlight, she didn't fully grasp the intensity of the scrutiny she would face, especially from the British press.
Friends' Warnings About the Tabloids
When Meghan first started dating Prince Harry, her friends were genuinely happy for her. However, her British pals were more cautious. "My friends were thrilled because I was so happy, but my British friends were like, 'Sure, he's great, but you shouldn’t do it. The British tabloids will destroy your life,'" Meghan recalled. Coming from an American background, Meghan was unfamiliar with the relentless nature of the British tabloids. "I didn’t get it. I was like, 'What are you talking about? I’m not in any tabloids,'" she confessed, adding that navigating this new world has been quite challenging.

Struggles in the Spotlight
Meghan opened up about her personal challenges as a new royal and mom to baby Archie. Harry, 35, had earlier addressed the media's treatment of his wife, calling out tabloids for their "bullying" tactics. In her interview, Meghan admitted that she never anticipated the media would be this harsh. "I thought it would be fair, and that’s the hardest part to reconcile," she confessed. "But you just take each day as it comes, right?"
Dealing with False Narratives
Meghan also touched on the frustration of dealing with false stories in the press. "If things are fair, I completely understand. If I do something wrong, I’d be the first to apologize," she said. "But when people say things that aren’t true, and they’re told they’re untrue but are still allowed to say them, I don’t think anyone in the world would find that acceptable." Meghan emphasized that this goes beyond mere scrutiny; it's a different beast altogether, one that’s harder to handle.
