Let me tell you something about one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, Julia Roberts. You might know her as the dazzling actress who stole our hearts in Pretty Woman or dazzled us with her charm in Eat Pray Love. But what you might not know is how much she credits her success and happiness to her family—specifically, her big-hearted older sister, Lisa Gillian. Recently, Julia took a moment to reflect on the early days of her career and how Lisa’s kindness shaped her into the person she is today.
At 52 years old, Julia shared these heartfelt thoughts with People magazine for their very first Kindness Issue. She spoke about how kindness comes in all shapes and sizes—some obvious, some more subtle. “Some acts of kindness are so direct and clear-cut, while others wrap around you like a warm hug,” she said. And when it comes to kindness, no one embodies that spirit better than her sister Lisa.
A Bond Built on Kindness

Julia reminisces about growing up alongside her older sister Lisa, now 54. Their bond was—and still is—nothing short of extraordinary. “When I think of kindness, my mind always drifts to Lisa,” Julia explained. She recounted a particular memory from their teenage years that stood out. “We were both going through that phase where everything feels so intense and self-centered. It's easy to get lost in your own world during those years.”

When Lisa Extended Her Hand
Julia’s appreciation for Lisa deepens when she recalls the moment Lisa welcomed her into her life as a roommate in New York City. “Right after I graduated high school at 17, Lisa had already moved to the Big Apple to attend theater school. She was just 19 herself, juggling her own responsibilities and dreams,” Julia recalled. “But when I asked if I could move in with her—mostly because I missed her so much—she didn’t hesitate for even a second. No questions asked, no conditions attached. She simply said yes.”

This act of generosity meant everything to Julia. “Lisa’s kindness was so natural and genuine that I didn’t even realize how special it was at the time,” she admitted. “But looking back, it gave me a sense of belonging that has stayed with me throughout my life. It taught me how to extend that same compassion to others.”
Still Living Life Together
Fast forward to today, and their connection remains just as strong. “Even though we’re adults now, our lives continue to intertwine beautifully,” Julia gushed. “We used to share apartments all over NYC, and now that we’re married and have families of our own, we live in separate apartments—but they’re in the same building!”
Julia concluded with heartfelt gratitude for her sister. “If I didn’t say it loud enough back then, let me say it now: Thank you, Lisa, for your endless kindness then and always. You’ve been my rock, my guide, and my biggest supporter.”
