She may have played the Queen on the big screen, but even Helen Mirren wasn’t prepared for the real deal. The legendary actress recently opened up about an unforgettable tea-time encounter with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, revealing the mix of excitement, nerves, and a touch of awkwardness that came with the royal experience.
During a lively discussion at the Helen Mirren and Hawk Koch Discuss The Magic of Movies event on November 8, the 74-year-old actress recounted the day she was invited for tea by the Queen herself. "I thought it was going to be one of those big events with 200 people in the room, which is usually how these things go," Helen shared with a laugh. "I’ve met Her Majesty before in such settings. So when I heard about the tea invitation, I figured, 'Oh, I can handle that.' But little did I know this would be something entirely different."
When Tea Gets Intense
As it turned out, the tea wasn’t a grand affair at all—it was an intimate gathering. And as Helen quickly discovered, tea with the Queen involves some pretty serious sandwich talk. "The Queen was having this intense conversation with Prince Philip about the contents of the sandwiches," she revealed. "It was like, 'What’s in this? What’s that?' Very important questions, indeed. Meanwhile, I’m sitting there, trying to enjoy my tea, but there’s a slight problem—my milk dilemma."

Here’s where things got tricky: the milk was on the other side of Prince Philip. "My mind completely froze," Helen admitted. "Do I call him 'Sir'? 'Your Majesty'? 'Your Highness'? Is it rude to ask him to pass the milk? Or should I just call for a servant?" The actress ultimately decided to skip the milk altogether. "I just couldn’t figure it out, so I finished my tea black," she said with a chuckle.
Learning from Embarrassment
Despite the minor hiccup, Helen walked away from the experience with a valuable lesson. "It was embarrassing, sure," she said, "but they were absolutely wonderful. The Queen and Prince Philip were incredibly gracious, and I learned a lot about handling those kinds of situations." This isn’t the first time Helen has crossed paths with royalty, either. She famously portrayed Queen Elizabeth in the 2006 film The Queen, earning widespread acclaim for her performance.
Interestingly, Helen has also had lighthearted interactions with other members of the royal family. "Prince Harry and Prince William have mentioned my portrayal of the Queen to me," she shared during an appearance on Good Morning Britain. "They were really cool about it, too. Although, Harry once referred to me as 'Granny' at an awards ceremony, and I was a bit insulted by that," she joked. "Really, now!"

Reflecting on Her Royal Legacy
For Helen, playing the Queen was more than just another role—it was a career-defining moment that brought her closer to the royal family in ways she never expected. "It’s been such an incredible journey," she reflected. "From portraying the Queen to sharing tea with her, every interaction has been memorable and humbling." And while the occasional awkward moment may arise, Helen takes it all in stride, reminding us that even the most seasoned actresses can find themselves at a loss for words in the presence of true royalty.
