Let’s face it, folks — the Back to the Future trilogy has left an indelible mark on pop culture. It’s one of those rare gems that has stayed relevant for generations. Now, while we won’t be seeing a fourth movie with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd anytime soon, franchise co-creator Bob Gale is bringing the magic to life in a whole new way. He’s transforming the first film into a full-blown musical, Back to the Future: The Musical. This show is set to premiere on the London stage, and if all goes well, it’ll be making its way to the U.S. before you know it.

Why a Musical? Because Hollywood Loves Broadway!

These days, it seems like every blockbuster movie is getting the Broadway treatment. Take a look at Mean Girls, Pretty Woman, Waitress, and even Tootsie. And let’s not forget Disney’s animated classics that have been adapted into live productions. But here’s the thing: while many of these musicals stick closely to their film counterparts, Bob Gale has something different in mind for Back to the Future. He’s not just going to recreate the movie on stage. Oh no, this is going to be a fresh take with plenty of surprises while staying true to the original story.

What Can Fans Expect From the Show?

According to Bob Gale, who co-created the original concept with director Robert Zemeckis, the musical will follow the storyline of the first movie. But here’s the kicker — they’re making adjustments to fit the stage. You won’t see a terrorist van chase or a high-speed skateboard scene because, let’s be honest, that’s just not practical on a Broadway stage. Instead, they’re condensing certain scenes and adding original music to keep the energy going. Bob promises that while the show will feel familiar, there will be plenty of new twists and moments that fans will love.

  • And Bob doesn’t want this to be a carbon copy of the movie. He explains, “If all you want is to see the movie on stage, rent the movie and watch it again. But if you want to celebrate Back to the Future and experience a new side of it, this is the show for you. We’re not going to ruin your childhood memories. This musical is going to entertain you and give you an unforgettable experience.”

Bob Gale’s Exciting Journey Bringing the Musical to Life

For Bob Gale, reuniting with Robert Zemeckis to write the book and script for the musical has been an incredible experience. He’s hands-on every step of the way, diving deep into the creative process. The musical is set to open on February 20 in Manchester, England, and from there, it’s expected to move to London’s West End within six to eight months. After that, the plan is to bring it to the U.S. if it’s a hit in the U.K.

And let’s talk about the cast. Bob assures us that they’ve found the perfect actors to bring Marty McFly and Doc Brown to life. He shares, “Olly Dobson as Marty and Roger Bart as Doc are amazing together. We invited some hardcore Back to the Future fans to our last workshop, and they were blown away. One fan who started the London chapter of the Michael J. Fox fan club said, ‘We were skeptical, but within six or seven minutes, we were completely sold on Olly.’ That’s the kind of reaction we’re hoping for!”
