Picture this: being married to the same person for over six decades. That's right, folks. Alan Alda and his wife, Arlene, have been together for an impressive 62 years. You’d think there must be some grand, elaborate secret to keeping a relationship alive and thriving for so long, right? Well, Alan decided to spill the beans on the exact formula that's kept their love alive all these years.
During the New York Film Festival premiere of Marriage Story on October 4, 2019, the beloved M*A*S*H alum, now 83, shared the secret to his enduring marriage. “My wife says the secret of a long marriage is a short memory,” Alan told Closer Weekly. He added with a chuckle, “And it seems to work!” Now, that’s something we can all try, isn’t it? But there's more to their story than just forgetting the little things.
Love That Stands the Test of Time
Alan went on to explain that he and Arlene don’t exactly spoil each other with extravagant gifts or grand gestures. Instead, their love is rooted in mutual respect and admiration. “Without her, I wouldn’t do an awful lot because every time I’m leaving the house to do some work, she says, ‘You’re going to be great,’” Alan revealed. “And I say the same thing to her. She’s a writer and a photographer, busy all the time, and I’m very proud of her.”

A Life Together
Alan and Arlene tied the knot way back in 1957, and since then, they’ve built a life filled with love, laughter, and family. Together, they have three daughters: Eve, 60, Elizabeth, 59, and Beatrice, 58. And while life hasn’t always been easy, especially with Alan's battle against Parkinson’s disease, their bond remains unshaken.
Since his diagnosis, Alan has taken a curious and proactive approach to managing the condition. “My life hasn’t changed much,” he told People. “I just applied my curiosity to it. I’m constantly reading and trying to figure out the best approaches. So far, it’s really interesting. I think it’s helped me understand a little better that everybody has something they’re coping with.”
